Land Rover Repair: cruise control, engine vacuum, john robison

Question
I have a 98 discovery and I'm trying to figure out how the cruise control works. I have pushed the set button on the wheel and it does nothing. Is there something else I need to do first? Also there is a button that looks like a skate board going over railroad tracks. I have no clue what it does. Thanks so much

Answer
You push that "railroad track" button in to enable the cruise.  Then you set it with the buttons on the steering wheel.  If it does not work when you do that, it's broken.  The most common cruise failure is crackign of the vacuum hoses.  The system uses engine vacuum to operate a diaphram that moves the throttle, and the rubber hoses get brittle and crack with age

Good luck with it
