Land Rover Repair: land rover disco 1, engine oil cooler, hot oil

Question
Hi John,

I have a leaking pipe/part on the bottom right hand side of my radiator in a Discovery 1997. The pipe comes out of the bottom of the radiator connects to a part then a hose run off underneath the engine. It is leaking oil, is it something to do with the transmission?

Also, recently my car heated up after the top rad hose failed, it didnt get that hot, maybe 3/4 on heat guage but now i can hear water cycling aroud behind the dash when i start her up in the morning? and sometimes when I accelerate? Any thoughts on those two issues?

Thanks so much! Also how can I tell when my shackles and bushes need re doing?

Answer
I'm pretty sure you are describing a leaking engine oil cooler line.  Follow the line to see where it goes as you have coolers for engine and transmission fluid.  Either way, it's imperative that you fix it right away because they are have a tendency to blow out once they have small leaks.  A blowout would spray hot oil all over the exhaust manifold and very likely result in the loss of your truck due to fire.  It would also be ruinous to the engine of transmission to run out of oil suddenly.

Good luck with it, and also check the Land Rover articles on my car blog.
