Land Rover Repair: Defender Td5 fuel pump whine, defender td5, luck john

Question
Hi John,

I own a 2002 Defender Td5 with around 130 000 km on the clock.  The fuel pump normally makes a buzzing sound when the ignition is switched on.  Recently it whines a lot more with different noises.  It sounds like it is purging the air from the system.  The performance feels 100%.  I just want to know how to check whether the pump is faulty or the filter is not purging out all the air.  I presume that when the fuel pressure is too low, the injectors might get damaged.

Regards
Radie

Answer
That noise may mean the pump is going bad, or the filter is getting clogged.  Change the filter now as a preventative measure and see what happens.  I've seen those pumps get noisy and just be that way for thousands of miles, but others fail straightaway.  Outside of filter replacement there is not much to be done

Good luck
