Land Rover Repair: 1996 disco starter removing heat shield, mounting bolt, heat shields

Question
Hi-regarding replacement of the starter on a 1995 discovery-you mentioned removing the heat shield to access the starter. Please explain in detail how to remove this I'm not seeing the bolt to loosen
Thanks

Answer
Hi Brent,

On my '95 Disco, the bottom (lower) mounting bolt on the starter holds the shield in place.  On your '96, the bolt that attaches your heat shield is on the engine mount and there could be two small locator tabs. Once loose, you may even be able to remove the starter without completely removing the shield.  Not the case with the older model...just depends on which one you have.

I have heard that some '96 models have the older shields and I've seen two different types for your vehicle.  Either way, it can be a real knucklebuster.

I took a look at the heat shields at www.roverparts.com (Atlantic British car parts) and they did not match the shields I have on my vehicles.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
