Land Rover Repair: defender 130, r380 gearbox, defender td5

Question
Hello. My question is regarding the R380 gearbox in a 2001 defender td5 130. At 100000k I needed a complete gearbox rebuild because the bearings and some teeth were shot to bits. Since the rebuild about 500ks from home, I have and intermittent problem where the drive shaft is still engaged after I slow down, engage the clutch and select neutral. This only happened a few times for the first 1500ks or so and now seems fine. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

Answer
Hi Laurie,

there is usually some 'break in' noises and sensations but nothing too extreme.  It could be just a matter of self adjustments taking place within the system.  If no warning lights were triggered and it drives well now, I would think you are ok.  You can confirm this with the shop that did the install.

Do you have a checkup/follow-up appointment with the shop?  If not, I would suggest you contact them and ask them for one ... just to be on the safe side.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
