these are very good questions about this vehicle.
Are 2000 Disco II's reliable - I'd rate it 6 out of 10 for reliability. When these vehicle breakdown, it will cost you plenty to repair AND its not always given that the dealer will FULLY repair it. Many LR owners have had their Disco's repaired only to find the fix was bad.
You can expect to pay 2x or 3x the price for parts and the labour charges are often $100 per hour or more. Dealers make big profits from service and I've contributed to this too many times!!! If you do buy the vehicle, find an independent LR mechanic as soon as you can.
Many components that do breakdown can only be serviced by mechanics who specialize in LR repair. Not every general mechanic understands how LR vehicles work - and I've seen many LR mechanics make mistakes too! The diagnostic equipment is expensive and so most dedicated LR mechanics should have them - general mechanics would not.
Problems with 2000 Disco's include faulty door locks and windows, water leaks in driver and passenger footwells, ABS, TC, HDC failure, sticking exhaust valves, air suspension failures and leaks, electronic transmission problems, various electrical shorts due to corroded harness or connectors, many have headgasket problems ($2000 to fix).
What I like is that it gives the best ride I've ever had in a 4x4. Interior comfort is better than most luxury cars, it has great ground clearance and I've never been stuck in mud or snow. On wind swept highways, no transport truck will cause my Disco to sway as it passes - a real plus on heavy rain soaked roads or during winter.
Keep the tires in good condition else you lose control in rough conditions. Since it's 4x4 all the time, you'll have to change your tires more often - depending on how you drive.
It's a heavy vehicle and the brakes are very, very important to maintain. Brake parts are expensive from the dealer but AC Delco and Raybestos parts are available.
