What is this major service that is required every 60000 km? What does it involve and does it really require and dealer to do it?

You do not need a dealer to service your car, but you do need a shop that is trained on Land Rovers.  YOu can look up the services on our web site, www.robisonservice.com > service dept > land rover > scheduled maintenance
