Land Rover Repair: 03 disco engine taooing noise, o2 sensors, noise source

Question
Thanks for your quick response. Can the catalyst make a tapping noise? Now that you mentioned it also sound like is comming from under the car (still it looks like is comming from the engine)How can i be sure that is or is not the catalyst. Also the noise goes away when i rev the engine.

Thank you again,
Jeremy.

Hi,

I have a 03 SE7 disco II 80K miles. It has a tapping noise which my mechanic thought it was the rocker arms, but not it was not. After spending a bout $2500 I still have the noise. It sound like is comming from the back of the engine driver side (is really hard to find where it comes from) The Disco drives fine, allthough some times when going up the hill it looses a little power. Any ideas, suggestions? I don really know what to do next, oh! I forgot to mention that I also replace the oil pump thinking that it was a low presure issue. I have the engine light on just once the O2 sensors wich I replace. Another thing is that in the mornings when I start the truck i sound like it has a exsaust leak, but any other time during the day it does not do that again.
Too many things, I will really apprecited any help you can give me.
Thanks a lot.
Jeremy.

Answer -
The noise could be a liner moving in the motor, or a cam problem, or something else.

You are sure it is not the catalyst, right?  You're sure it's within the motor?  Catalyst noises can fool you, sounding like they come from the motor.

If the noise is really inside the motor, you really need to ship the truck to an expert unless you are prepared to dismantle the motor yourself.

Rockers are about the only noise source you can address without engine removal and teardown.

Answer
If the catalyst is bad you can usually put the car on a lift and bang it with a mallet and hear it rattle.  And of course you can listen carefully.

Catalyst rattles often go away when the motor is revved
