Land Rover Repair: engine lacks power after fluids changed, discovery tdi, coolant system

Question
Hi John,

First of all nice to write you.

Well, before going on journey this summer I took the disco to a meccanical to change for me all the oils (engine/gear/diff ecc...).

The disco looked more fluid after this maintenance operation. My problems started after the first 150 Km.
The engine heated like never did before, the gauge till the first 10 min of marche jump to 1/2 and stay there for awhile and than it depends on the speed.
in highway crossing at 110Km/H the gauge jump to 3/4.
In the last 3 years, the disco never had such a problem.

Second big problem is:

The engine can't reach in 5 gear the 3000 round per second and i can't travel at more than 110 km/h.
Before all of this, the disco crossed ad 140Km/h easily and could reach 150Km/h.....
I think the meccanique man had overfill the engine with oil.

The engine seems to be suffocated.

Can you please help me understand?
Many thanks in advance.
Hichem.

PS:
Discovery tdi 200;MY 1992 county.

Answer
Hi Hichem,

could be that the coolant system has an air blockage of some sort.  You should consider trying to purge the air or having the coolant system drained, flushed and refilled.  If the temps still reach high levels, have your radiator pressure tested.

As for lack of power, it's possible to drain off some of the oil to see if your engine recovers.  You may want to determine if the transmission fluid was changed and even the transfer gearbox gear oil.

I could be that the wrong transmission fluid was used.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
