Land Rover Repair: lights, auto electrician, fuse box

Question
hello John,
i have just tried all the things you mentioned and i seem to have found the problem it was the main wire running from the alternator to the fuse box,it was a little frayed ,i have wrapped it with electrical tape and my lights do not flicker any longer,
1. I want to know if its possible to replace this whole wire or can i cut the frayed and refresh with new wire.
2.The second question is now i have disconnected the battery and now my radio which has a 6disc changer under the passenger seat ,says code.
i do not have the code,do you know how to reset it,i have pushed one or two buttons already and a small beep sounds.
please help .
thanks for your help again

Hi Adie,

my first guess is to check the battery terminal connections.  Are they loose?

Next time this happens, turn on the radio...does it cut out too?

IF it's just the lights, interior and exterior, you could have a short in the wiring or a bad wiring harness somewhere.

It could also be a problem with the main fuse box itself.  Our Disco is prone to corroded connections and shorts.

An auto electrician should be consulted or your local LR dealer.

If it was the alternator, the battery not be charging and your lights would dim.  If you have a faulty battery, the alt would be overworking and will eventually fail as well.  Best to start with the battery then move on to fuse box, ground points around vehicle.

Best of luck,

Hi Adie,

by all means correct the frayed wire problem.  Oil, dirt and corrosion of this wire could cause you even bigger problems if some of those components start to get low amp/volts.  I can't see how much wire you have OR where the fraying starts and ends, so you'll have to decide if clipping out the bad and patching in a good wire is appropriate.  It may be that you'll have to replace the entire wire.

Recently, the ignition wire on my starter solenoid was replaced.  It was soaked in oil, dirt, grime, crud (a technical term) and becoming corroded.  I had difficulty starting my Disco and after some investigation found that this connector wire had to be replaced.  I clipped off the tip and about 5 inches and replaced it with new wire.  I've used solderless wire joints to attach this 16 gauge wire.  I also taped over this to keep out the water (I wish).  In my case, the starter is very close to the catalytic pipe, so heat is a big concern.  In your case, it is not that close to a heat source.  SO...you could get away with wire joints and tape BUT don't just tape it over.  If it's corroded, replace it or clip it back until there is no more corrosion.

As for the security code, you'll have to get this from the dealer.  There is no other way that I am willing to able to discuss.  It's best this way as any theif could then take your radio/cd and we all suffer.

Glad to see you are on the road to recovery,

JohnMc
