Land Rover Repair: Check Engine and Idle Problems, obd ii scan tool, daily basis

I own a 02" Discovery and a few days ago I noticed a strange idling, then this morning my check engine light came on. Any ides? What is the best course of action?

The first step is to connect an OBD II scan tool and see what fault codes are stored.

Once you know what the codes are, go to a Land Rover workshop manual and look up the tests associated with the particular codes.

If you need a manual and have not got one you can subscribe to Land Rover's offical site, www.landrovertechinfo.com on a daily basis for $18 US.  A day's access is all you should need . . . print all the relevant materials and have at it in terms of testing.

The fault code does not point to a specific repair in most cases.  It points to further tests, which are described in the manuals.
