Is it possible to replace a piston from underneath? A piston rod went on my '99 Discovery and I would like to repair it as quickly as possible. I plan on rebuilding the engine in the winter, so I just want to get a few months out of it. Any help is appreciated. Is it possible to replace a piston from underneath? You can't remove the pistons from below.  The block castings are in the way.

If you broke a rod the engine should be removed, stripped, cleaned, and completely overhauled.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have since bought a Discovery for the engine (a rod went through the block on mine).

When I remove the engines, is there anything to look out for or be aware of, beside the usual engine swap things?

Answer
If the new motor has more than 75,000 miles on it I'd probably pull the heads and do a valve job because of the tendency to get carbon fouling.  I'd look it over carefully . . .water pump, oil leals, etc.  I'd pull the pan and make sure there's no sludge.
