Land Rover Repair: Automatic transmission lever stuck in park, land rover discovery, side lever

Question
Land ROVER DISCOVERY 1996

Problem:   The transmission lever is stuck in park and won't budge (engine running, brake pedal pressue and emegency brake engaged).  When the side lever on the hanle is pressed you can hear a relay click behind the glove compartment. I took off the door to the glove compartment to expose the yellow relays. the one on the far ringht clicks when the transmission lever button is engaqged. I also took off the cover to the lever handle but nothing seems to be out of order.

Background:  The other nagging problems I've had with this vehicle over the past five years I've had it are braking issues ...always seems like the brakes are loosing fluid pressure although the mechanics say that the breaks are normal. I have the problem that many seem to have with the ABS break light.  The vehicle also has lock and alarm problems as well.

Answer
Chances are, your stop lamp switch contacts have failed.  The switch is above the brake pedal.  To move the car till you get another switch jump the two wires on the connector with a paperclip, but remember that even though you can now shift into drive you have no stop lamps.
