Land Rover Repair: 1997 power locks and remote fob not working, power locks, fuse box

Question
I just bought a 97 disco SE7. 125k miles but looks well maintained. Having a bad luck experience so far. One night i get out and the remote doesnt lock the doors.  Also the power locks dont work.  I lock all doors and go inside to research the problem.  I read how to fix it online, open the door and click the button 8 times.  This was for the one button fob and i have the 2 button fob.  no luck.  i go to start the car, and the alarm goes off, honking and flashing.  i go to disconnect the battery to not wake up the neighbors and the pos battery connector that runs to the fuse box breaks from old age.  Upon reconnection and starting, the check engine light comes on.

i do however remember when i pushed the lock button, the red led on the dash would blink fast.  i opened the fob to replace the battery and after that, no blinking light.  not sure if i damaged the fob while opening.  i fixed the battery cable, and go under the dash to check the alarm ECU.  while under their i see the glove box light switch is loose.  i wiggle it, and notice the glove box light goes out.  now i also notice my passenger side brake lights dont work, nor do my dash lights.  also when i open the driver door, the interior light blinks 7 ttimes.

After finding the ECU, i disconnect and reconect the cables and no luck.  i also see that someone before me reset the engine light by shorting the emisions relay thingy that is red and next to the ECU.

Here is what i think happend, and let me know if i am on track or way off.

The person i bought the car from, used a obdII to reset the engine light which was coming on becuase of emissions/exhaust leak.  by unplugging the battery, i reset the ECU and cleared the command to turn off the engine light, and the emissions computer put it back on.

The dash lights and brake lights are due to teh glove box?  Fingers crossed.

And the Power locks/remote fob are due to a bad ECU?

On top of this, 2 days before all this, which was the day after i bought the car, some tools fell off the back of a semi truck and went through my windshield.  Any help in getting my baby back on the road would rock.

Answer
Hi Chris,

I think someone is telling you something..."if it weren't for bad luck, you'd have no luck at all".

That tool into the windshield was the 'cherry' topper to this sad tale.

Well, you're close to being on track:  the dash and rear lights are in 'series' with some lights inside the dash.  If one goes...it usually takes out some others.  Remember this when you find a sidemark light.  Replace the bulb and it should return to 'normal'.

Yes, the security ECU is probably the root of all evil.  It will cause you endless problems and won't go away soon.  Best to have LR repair this as they are very familiar with what is failing.

As for the windshield, consider buying an aftermarket replacement for a fraction of the price.  In fact, here is a great website that you should put in your wallet...

www.car-part.com

They can search out almost any part for your LR at a fraction of the OEM price.

Best of luck,

NB: I've had 3 windshield's on my '95 Disco.
