Land Rover Repair: 94 disco, transfer stuck in high, mechnic, canadian thanksgiving

Question
Hi john,I have 94 disc Auto, the gear box is stuck in high. i tried moving it in N standing as well as moving under 5mph and kicking trans back in N as manual suggest. history, i have a 98 disco, so i understand a bit about normal procedures. I purchased this one about 6 months ago, just got 100,000 miles. The people who had it, where over 65, i dont think they ever moved it. they sold it to a mechnic, whom i made the purchase from, he told me the stick was stuck, but he was able to move the gear box manualy when it was on the lift. A few questions. Is what the mechanic told me possible, that is every thing in the gear box works except moving stick?  Do you an mechanical diagrahams of this, so i can have a repair done without going to dealer?9 (neibor is a 20 yr VW mech, gearhead with lift!) Do you have anyother suggestions? It runs well, and stays on pavement 99% of the time, should I just leave it alone?  Thank you very much, and Happy thanksgiving to you and your family!

Answer
Hi Mike,

lucky you!  A '94 Disco with low mileage and a neighbour who is a gearhead (nice tag) with tools!

It will be difficult to fix this problem.  I was alwasy told that at least once every month or so, lock the diff up and use the lower gears. IF you don't, the shifter will seize and then its either a total replacement or one hell of a job freeing it.

I read an article on this a couple of years ago.  I'll try to find it for you.  I remember it said something about using brute force BUT to a certain point.  Give me some time and I'll post a followup with what I can find.

Regards,

JohnMc

NB:  Happy Thanksgiving!  We had our Canadian Thanksgiving a bit earlier than you...too cold now for another turkey day!  ;)
