Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 2000 lincoln navigator, Burnt smell, rearend leak

Question
Recently, while driving my suv, my lincoln stared to act funny. It was as if I was dragging something, then the back axle or somewhere back there started clicking. The truck also started smelling like burnt oil. I pulled into a mechanic shop where they said it was the rear end (differential). That the oil was leaking and that the gears probably burnt out, could they be right? and if so what is the easiest and cheapest most efficent way to do this?

Answer
Mari,
Yeah, either their right or the brakes in the rear locked up. To have them replace all the bearings, gears & seals with new parts would be VERY expensive(parts+labor). If it were me, I'd have the shop get one out of a salvage yard.

If you can't find one locally, call this Ford/Lincoln only salvage yard in Jax.,Fl. 1-800-782-4885 (Rusty Acres Automotive)
