Lincoln/Mercury Repair: Radiator: 01 Mercury Sable 6 cyl DOHC, mercury sable, water pumps

Question
2001 Sable, 6cyl DOHC is overheating, but radiator remains cool to touch while hoses leading to it are hot.

1) is it worth trying a radiator flush to clear out some sort of "clog", or should we just replace the radiator?

2) replacement is an expensive proposition - is this something my husband could/should attempt at home, to save labor $$, or is it awfully complex?  He's pretty handy and has done car repairs (including radiator stuff, water pumps, etc.) in past, but we have no specialized equipment.

Thanks for your help.
