Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 2000 Mercury Sable, mercury sable, diagnostic check

Question
Starting problems.  Its been over a month that I have had this problem. It began as I was driving and my car stalled for a second or two and then I parked and it took me a couple of times to get my car started when I turned the key the lights and radio came on but it wouldn't start the engine.  I took it for a quick diagnostic check and they said it was the starter or electrical.  So they put in a new starter and I would still have problems intermittently starting my car.  So I took it to another Mechanic that put yet another starter in it when I asked him to check to see in the steering column or with the key switch.  I put a new battery just in case it was the battery as well.  He thought it was fixed but I took it home and sure enough it did the same thing.  I brought it back and said to check fuses, wires to the starter as well and he said he did and that he also check for everything possible and he had a diagnoses of a new key should be made because the chip after he had consulted with other mechanics.  So I towed my car to the dealer to make the new keys (because I could not get it to start) for a couple of hundred dollars more and also they had to reformat the key because they said the information was erased.  I went to pick it up and the next day the car would not start again when I went to go start it and kept trying for three days after that and today it started again.  I was very upset with $600 paid in mechanics bills and this matter not being taken care and now the Dealership wants me to go back and have them diagnose it again which they estimate will be hours not an hour in mechanics time to find the problem. I feel like I am paying them for job training.  I need someone who has come across this problem and maybe can pinpoint the area or resolution.  I'm a widow with a disabled child and I cannot afford to have my car down or pay money out friviolusly.
I would appreciate some help and thank you.
