Mazda Repair: Miata not started since 1999, combustion area, direct email

Question
I have recently acquired a 93 miata that has 33000 miles on it.  It hasn't run
since 1999. The body has no rust the interior still looks brand new. I'm
wondering how much work would be involved to get it up and running and a
ballpark figure as to what its worth if i were to just sell it as is. Thanks so much

Answer
That's not totally uncommon.  Many are put into limited use as collectibles and time creeps up on them if not put into some type of use.

Since it has not been run it will have some varnish and gum issues within the cylinder head combustion area.  Most noted, the valve to valve guide area.  This area my be able to be resolved with a slow solvent induced break in and daily hand rotation of the engine working up to daily starter rotation with the ignition disabled then up to attempted firing.  I would caution heavily to resist the temptation to "fire it up" without these procedures being done first.

If a valve stick within a guide it may release from the keepers and drop into the cylinder causing heavy internal damage.

Other concerns;  Old gas and varnish from that, fuel pump and the assembly being corroded, fuel filter, fuel regulator and injectors being varnished internally from old gas.

Otherwise Miatas are well if not over engineered.  They will surprise you has to how well they can return from a dead state and return into daily use.

The best ways to determine fuel concerns; first remove the cap and see if you smell old stale gasoline, if so, roll back the rear deck carpet to gain access to the fuel pump (under an access plate) un-plug and remove the two hoses (note which goes where) remove the screws from around the oval pump head (don't drop any) lift the pump up and inspect the inside of the tank and the gas within.  If it's old it will be noxious, use caution.

Good luck.
