Question
No, the noise does not go away when the car has warmed up.  It will also stop when I start driving.  It seems to only do it when I am stopped and in park

-----Question-----
I have a 2000 Mazda MPV, and when i put the van in drive there is a ticking noise that sounds like it is coming from inside the dashboard area, or behind it.  Can anyone tell me what this noise is?

Thanks
-----Answer-----
had alot of those, most was a cracked exhaust manifold.(they are under warantee for 8 yrs, 80k miles.) does the noise go away when it warms up?

Answer
When engine at idle, a tapping or ticking noise maybe heard around the
the upper timing chain area on the right bank of the engine. The noise
becomes obscured with other engine sounds when engine exceeds 1500 RPM.

On the backside of the chain adjuster, the screw head holding the spring
plates may break off. The result is reduced oil pressure and
insufficient tension applied to right side timing chain.

1. Verify Customer complaint.
2. Remove timing chain cover.
3. Remove right side chain adjuster only.
4. Make sure that screw head and both spring plates are removed from the
engine.
5. Install new chain adjuster with a production date of September 10,
1999 or greater.
6. Verify repair.
