Mazda Repair: 2002 Mazda 626 check engine light, mazda 626, luck chris

Question
The check engine light just came on while driving in the mountains of California.  The car has just over 30k on it, and was serviced 2 weeks ago with no problems noted.  I checked the gas cap and it was on right and tight.  The fluids are fine and the car appears to be running fine.  Would it be okay to drive it about 150 miles back to the Bay Area tomorrow if it is running okay, and then have it checked by our dealer?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Jack thanks for asking..
It should be OK to drive for a while.. You may see a huge difference in fuel economy though. When a check engine light comes on it is usualy due to an emssions related failure, like an egr valve, DPFE sensor, random misfire, an evaportive emmsioions control system leak,  ECT....
Just take it to the dealership ASAP to have it checked out to prevent any damage to the engine
Good luck
