Mazda Repair: 87 Mazda B2200 stalls, mazda b2200, gas gauge

Question
I have an '87 Mazda B2200 that just started stalling.  I thought at first it was out of gas since the gas gauge doesn't work, but after I got gas it drove for about 30 miles fine and then sputtered to a stop.  I couldn't get it started for about 10 minutes after that, then it drove fine for another 30 miles, then stalled twice.  I had the fuel pump replaced a little over a year ago, the spark plugs and belts a few months ago, the fuel filter a month ago, and the master cylinder a few months ago.  Now my mechanic says it's the distributor.  Could that cause it to stall and act like it's not getting gas?  Also, the brakes will sometimes go to the floor when I try to stop, but if I let it up real fast and hit them again they are tight again.  Could that be related?  Before I spend $300 on a new distributor, I would like to know if this could be the reason for the stalls.

Answer
Hi Laura
When a carburetor runs dry from fuel there is a huge possibility that some debris from the bottom of the fuel tank plugged the needles in the carburator, That would be the first thing that I check. Have someone run a flush through the carb and see if that helps at all.
Good Luck
