Mazda Repair: B2300 no start, dis module, coil windings

Question
Hi Randall,
I have a '94 mazda B2300 that will not start.
The engine will roll over but will not catch.  I have been in the past having trouble like this but I always just get out and pull some plugs and wires (ie. the grey DIS module plugss) and the truck usually starts.  I have removed a plug #1 from the engine and turned over the engine but it don't seem like there is any fire on that one.  Could it be the dis module or both coils and is there anyway of checking them without having to buy new parts and hope they work :-P

Thanks Keith

Answer
Well being that your vehicle is a 94 it shouldn't have a DIS system but if it is a DIS it is also know as a waste spark system. There should be another spark plug being fired at the same time the number 1 cylinder is being fired. If there isn't any spark coming from either plugs then then coil for the plugs may need to be replaced. The best way to check for voltage is to use a DSO if possible. If there isn't a spark coming from any of the plugs then your primary ignition coil windings may need to be replaced. Write back with more details or questions. IT also may be just a loose connection going to the coil packs
