Mercedes Benz repair: Timing injection pump on 1974 Mercedes 240 D, mercedesshop, shopforum

Question
My car is blowing white smoke. It is a 1974 240 D. I have checked the fuel return lines for blockage, cleaned but did not test the injectors, checked the timing chain and it has no excess slack. I think my problem might be injection pump timing.

I do not have a book and I do not know how to set the injection pump timing. Is it something that can be accomplished without special tools?  Please advise.
