MG Car Repair: 1972 MGB Starting problem, battery connections, mgb

Question
Hello, I am having trouble starting my 1972 MGB. It has 2 brand new batteries and a new alternator. The battery connections are good also. The car won't even turn over or click, no horn either. But, I can jump start it from another car and it starts up and runs well, with no problems. What do I need to do to fix and solve this?

Answer
Hi Bruce.

The fact that the car can be started with jump leads proves that the problem lies with the batteries or their connections.  Each battery has 2 terminals, so it is important to check that all 4 terminals are really tight.  If you have the original terminals with cups held in place by a central screw, then give each cup a `bop' with a mallet to seat it firmly on the tapered battery post.  Now turn the headlamps on.  They should glow brightly.  Also, the horn should now work and the engine should start.

Did you remember to charge the batteries? New batteries do not always come fully charged.  However, even a partially discharged battery should have enough power to operate the horn.

If none of this works, then perhaps one of the brand new batteries is faulty.
