MG Car Repair: 1975 MGB Wont start, smell of gas, starter system

Question
Hi Howard- ok I have replaced the battery and the alternator. After charging the battery it started but with many attempts that smelt like flooding. I drove it around yesterday drove perfect stopped for 10 mins attempted to start and it would not. All lights on no problem there again smell of gas, it just would not turn over like fuel is not getting to where it needs to go.  Help? Please.

Answer
Hi Paula,
When you say "it just would not turn over like fuel is not getting to where it needs to go" You will need to clarify that for me. The starter motor is what turns it over to start and that has nothing to do with gas. If the engine was not rotating by the starter motor or was turning slowly then the starter system needs to be looked at more closely. Also, all tests need to be made when the car is in it's failed mode. (when it does not want to start)
If the engine is turning over very slowly there are many things that can cause that besides a low battery due to an alternator not keeping is charged.
All diagnosis must be done by tests not by symptoms. Symptoms can lead you to a section but then tests must determine what is wrong.

When it does not start, does it turn over fast and just not fire off or is it turning over slowly like a low battery? This is the first step.
