Mitsubishi Repair: Blowing Heavy Black Smoke, air hoses, fuel filter

Question
I have a 94 v6 Magna. It's blowing black smoke really badly, particularly at start up and acceleration following idol. It's becoming very embarrassing!!!!!
I intend to change the air filter and a couple of cracked hoses I've found along with changing to a 10w40 oil.
Am I possibly on the right track? Anything else I can try??
Cheers

Answer
Anthony,
Black smoke typically indicates you engine is running too rich; too much fuel compared the amount of the air entering the engine.  Having a poor air supply or unmeasured air entering the intake can surely contribute to your black smoke problem.  So replacing the air hoses and air filter may help.  If the black smoke continues, your next move should be to do more complete tune-up.  Replace the spark plugs, PCV valve, fuel filter, and have your ignition timing inspected.
Good luck!
