Mitsubishi Repair: 2002 MITSUBISHI SPYDER OIL ISSUE, mitsubishi eclypse, mitsubishi spyder

Question
Hi, I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclypse Spyder, 4 cyl, 2.4L engine. Last week the car felt like it was going to stall when starting to drive. Put oil in and new oil filter and was fine. 2 days later happened again, again added oil and was fine. Oil light is still going on and car feels like will stall. There is no oil leaking from under the car and there is no smoke of any color coming from exhaust. At same time, battery is dyine and less than a year old. We have cleaned the terminals but still not starting well. Any help would be appreciated and also wondering if these 2 issues could be somehow connected?

Answer
Irene,
If you need to continuous add oil to keep it at the full mark, then the oil is definitely exiting your car somehow.  It may be a leak that only occurs when you drive or or ma be slowly burning away without the presence of smoke.

When you engine begins to stall, it's quite common for the oil like to flicker.  The light is controlled by a sensor attached to your oil filter housing, and oil is being pumped though it mechanically by a pulley attached to your crankshaft.  So if the engine is moving very slowly (i.e. feels like it's going to stall), then oil pressure would be low that the sensor detects, and your light would come on.  In the case of your battery dying, that may be indication of a weak alternator.  Any mechanic can test our charging system (alternator, battery, etc.) and determine if they performing optimally.  You can also have your mechanic check for any oil leak or poor compression which could lead to oil loss as well.
Good luck!
