Mitsubishi Repair: 1990 mitsubishi montero, mitsubishi montero, windshield wipers

Question
I have never messed with the wiring in this vehicle, ie changed stereo... one night i was driving and the headlights shut off, the next night headlights were on but no tail lights then, no turn signals. another night i was driving and it started raining, the windshield wipers wouldn't work unless the headlights were on high beam. The the headlights would only work on high beam, now I have nothing except windshield wipers and they go very slow. I have consulted mechanics and am told I need to just completely have it rewired. Is there a logical explanation, and a better place to start on this problem than to just rewire it? HELP!! please

Answer
Jennifer: Sounds like a nasty short to me, someplace the wires are touching that should not be and so everything either works together or not at all. You need to find someone what will work with you, they need a voltmeter, start with the battery work around the car till they find your problem. Oh you need to buy a repair manual for your car, most parts stores have them, they sell for around $20.00 and that manual would explain what readings that voltmeter should be showing up. Once you get the wrong reading you will start finding your problem. You should also check under the left front fender, there is where they ran the wiring for things. Sometimes those wires will come loose and fall down so that the tire is bumping them. Older the car, more rust and the  splash guard is bad or just gone, so you should check that out too. You need to find a friend that can read a repair manual and that voltmeter, the mechanics are only telling you that you need to rewire because they are looking at you as a woman who does not know anything about cars. A easy buck, now true you might have to rewire some things, if there is a wire or more broken. But see about the repair manual, voltmeter and a friend first? Hope this helps and God bless: Linda

PS. In with the engine is from one or two black boxes, in them are relays and fuses, it could be that you have blew one of those too. So you should check that out, some cars has one and others cars have up to three of these black boxes, there should be one on the driver's side of the engine and others over by the battery. In them are relays and fuses, that control headlights, tail lights, wipers well about everything, so get someone to check those too. They are often hard to check, you will need a flashlight to see if the relay or fuse is ok. Oh hey don't let these mechanices get you down.
