Mitsubishi Repair: 95 Lancer MX, distributor cap, fuel filter

Question
Hi There,
I have a 1.3 carburetted 12 valve 95 Lancer MX with M/T. The problem that i face every day is that when accelerating, around 4000-4500 rpm the car sort of jerks and makes a whup whup whup sound. The local mech said it was just the air intake, changed the air filter and the problem reduced but then came back again. Also the car wont run freely and light, the pick up is good but the car feels like its running under load or strain. Could it be the spark plugs?

Plz help.
Khurram

Answer
Hello Khuram,

I suggest to ALWAYS go with the less expensive possibilities first. If it's been a while, a tune-up's cheap, easy and can never hurt. Depending on your ignition system, you may want to replace your distributor cap and rotor at the same time as these parts receive substantial wear. You may want to change your fuel filter too. If there've been any modifications made to the vehicle, it could be running too rich. From there I would start testing sensors and the ECU.

Good Luck and Have Fun!
