Mitsubishi Repair: 1988 Mitsubishi Ram 50, negative battery cable, throttle position sensor

Question
the truck has been parked for about 5 years without being started. I got it started and it won't stay idling. I have to keep stepping on the throttle to keep it going. I sprayed carb cleaner into the carb but still the same. I changed the plugs and wires. cleaned the cap and rotor but still won't idle. what could it be? does the carb need to be rebuilt? Vacuum hose still look good, no cracks. Also want to add the check engine went on after I changed the plugs, cap and rotor.

Answer
Alan: If the check engine light came on, you have a sensor out someplace. Only a guess here but could be a throttle position sensor, but go to an AutoZone and they will do a free sensor check for you. Give you a read out and you will know which sensor needs to be replaced. Even the older models had those sensors. I think I would clean the carb really well, put in a new air filter. Oh hey to clear the code on your computer in your truck, just unhook the negative battery cable for about about 15 seconds or longer. But first you got to fix the sensor that is out. Hope this helps and good luck!
