Mitsubishi Repair: Frequency Short in Radio, mitsubishi eclipse, service folks

Question
Anthony -
I have a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS.  The car came with a factory installed Infinity AM/FM cassette stereo that controlled a 10-disc changer in the trunk.  My radio has stopped working -- although I can still play tapes and listen to CDs in the changer.  The dealer says there is a frequency short inside the radio.  They say it will be at least $400 to fix it, if it can be fixed at all, or at least $800 to replace it.
1)Can this short be fixed?  If so, is it terribly expensive to do?  Where else could I go?
2)If not, do you know of some where I can get another Inifinity radio that will be able to control the CD changer?
Thank you,
Amber

Answer
Amber,
In most cases, especially since your warranty has expired, the dealership would most likely opt to replace the unit.  They would want to do this because it's easier than trying to fix it, plus they make more money.  But it might be able to be fixed, and yes, it would cost a lot of money.

Many aftermarket stereos like Sony, Kenwood, Alpine, JVC, etc, will work with your existing 10-disk changer.  Places like BestBuy and Circuit City offer a large selection of radios that will work with your CD-changer, and at a fraction of the cost that the dealership would charge you (some as low as $100).  I'm not sure if they carry Infinity stereos, but they might.  In my experience, many aftermarket stereos are better than the ones you get from the factory .  Go to one of those stores if you have one in your area and ask one of the service folks about replacing the radio in your car.  I can almost guarantee there won't be a problem.
Good luck!
