Motorcycle Repair: 1980 CB650 Replacement Carbs, diaphragms, bad situation

Question
I recently bought a 1980 CB650 and brought it to my local shop for a tune up & replace the exhaust.  After looking over the bike, it looks like the carbs are in serious need of cleaning and the diaphragms are damaged.  I was also told those carbs are a one off year, so replacement parts are difficult to find.  Some non standard parts may need to be used as well.  The carbs seems to be the root cause of bike's performance problems... so something needs to be done.

In the end, the total cost will be close to what I paid for the bike.  The majority of the cost is from the labor in fixing the old carbs.

Could you recommend any aftermarket carbs to replace the old carbs? Preferably ones that can easily replace the old ones and require no additional parts to be added to my bike (new air filter, etc)?

If not, could you recommend a pair of carbs to replace the old ones and any parts that would be needed?

Thanks,

Tony

Answer
Hi Tony,
It sounds like a bad situation for sure, patience is key here it seems. There are lots of variables here, especially with the small amount we know about the current situation. Often there are very few "non-standard" parts that will work correctly for a specific job. You may consider checking around for a used set, I found this carb body on ebay (item #56497bc563). You may need all 4 and it may take a while to find the set. Perhaps yours can be used for parts to rebuild another set. As for another set I can only recommend stock, aftermarket often is a task for a good technician/fabricator.

Terry.
