Motorcycle Repair: oil leak, honda v65 magna, 1984 honda v65 magna

Question
1984 honda v65 magna leaking oil down #1 exhaust pipe at header

Answer

Hi Brady,

If your bike is running okay it might
just be the exhaust header gaskets
are leaking. They are about four dollars
to replace.

If the oil is coming from another location
then it could be some other gasket.

If the bike is not running well then
it might indicate other problems.
Possibilities include a carb float
too high or float needle valve leaking
fuel into the cylinder.

At the worse case end is piston or ring
damage allowing oil to blowby the rings
and exit through the exhaust pipe.
If this were the problem the cylinder
would be low on compression most likely.
Worn valve guides and seals could allow some oil into
the cylinder as well.

1.I would check that your oil is not diluted
or too thin.

2.Replace exhaust pipe header
gasket and make sure that cylinder is
running strong. The pipe should heat
up at the same rate as the others.
If it feels cooler when you first start the
bike the cylinder may have problems.

3.Check for other leaks that may
look like a header leak, cylinder
head cover gasket for example.

4. Check cylinder compression and heat rate.

5. Check spark plug condition and color for clues
on the combustion conditions in that cylinder.

There may be some unburnt fuel under normal
running conditions that will leak out of
the pipe if the header is loose or the header
pipe gasket is leaking.
Excessive header oil leaks indicate an oil ring control problem.

Good luck,
Wayne S.
