Motorcycle Repair: Sticking clutch?, clutch adjustment, wet clutch

Question
I have a 1982 CBX with 17,000 miles on it. I've had it for four years and use it sparingly. I also started using synthetic oil in it a couple of years ago (I checked the CBX forums and people said this was OK, but maybe not?).

The issue is I am getting the impression that it is getting harder to change gear, and that there is a noticeable 'clunk' when I put it into first from neutral, especially when cold. If the engine is not yet fully warmed up this can stall the engine. The clutch is adjusted to give a substantial release pull, so it is not a matter of clutch adjustment.

Thanks!

Dominic

Answer
I am assuming you are using the synthetic oil suitable for wet clutch engines?  It sounds like the clutch plates are sticking more than normal, so to suspect your oil is the correct approach.  Also check the tension in your drive chain and the condition of the sprockets, which can add to the 'clunk' if not at the right tension.  Let me know what you're using for oil,  Jan
