Motorcycle Repair: reinstall starter on honda motorcycle, 1983 honda goldwing, negative battery cable

Question
My dad needs to know how to reinstall a starter for a 1983 Honda Goldwing 1100 Interstate. He took it off but can't reinstall it. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you, Beverly

Answer
Hi Beverly,

The GL1100 starter uses two bolts to hold it on
but if there is not enough room you may
have to drop the left side exhaust system.
Remove the shifter lever also.

The starter has an o-ring gasket that you may
need to oil to help the starter slide back in.
Also the starter may need a little wiggling to get
it into place inside the starter gear in the engine.

The manual actually says to remove the engine
but this is not usually necessary.

If the starter happens to be off a GL1000
it may be a little longer than the GL1100
starter. This may be tougher to install.

Remove the negative battery cable to prevent any accidents.
Put the bike on the side stand and
it might be easier to drop the starter back in.
Lube the o-ring and wiggle it back into
the starter hole. Tighten the bolts,
Reconnect the starter cable.
Try turning the starter motor shaft slightly if
you have trouble getting it back in.

It should go back in but last resort would
be to loosen frame rails and or the whole engine.

Good luck!
