QUESTION: Bill, I have a 78 Honda XL100. What I would like to know is how to wire the bike with out a battery and no lights. So that I only have just a kill switch. I just need bare minimum wiring.

ANSWER: Micheal, if the bike had a CDI ignition or a magneto ignition there would be no problem.....

But there IS a problem. Honda designed the bike to use a charging system and the ignition system is points/condenser and battery powered. You might be able to use a big capacitor in place of the battery to save some weight. You need a power source to run the ignition system, so the power needs to come from somewhere.

The related TL125 Trials bike does have a magneto ignition system adapted to it.

Later model CB125S models, made in Brazil had a CDI ignition system installed. Hard to find, but that might work, if you can get all the components from a parts bike.

QUESTION: Bill, thank you for the info. I bought a battery, but I am still having a problem. The wiring diagram that I am using is for a 77-78 XL75 it is the closest one to my bike the one you have the link for is for a 79-85 XL100. I have attached a drawing of the wiring harness that I am using to wire my bike please check it and see where I am going wrong something is not working.

Micheal, you can't use the XL75 diagram, because those engines have a magneto ignition system. Only use the SL/XL 100-125 diagrams, which have battery powered ignitions, deleting the unnecessary wiring.

Your diagram has the condenser attached to the + side of the coil, which is incorrect.

+ power from ignition switch goes to + side of coil. Points and condenser attach to the - side of the coil.
