Motorcycle Repair: e-starter on 305 engine, starter clutch, bill silver

Question
Hello,
I have some probs with my e starter.I think it binds up sometimrs when I try to start.Could you tell me if there is a bushing in the little sprocket nose side that one could change out like in the starter on the cb350 mot?Or does the end of the shaft run in aluminum?
Thanks for the help
Elliott

Answer
Elliott,  Usually the "binding" is the starter clutch trying to grasp the inner clutch hub to spin the motor over. Generally, the electric starter issues are the three springs that collapse, causing irregular gripping of the inner hub.

The hub bushing is seldom and issue and the bushing is not replaceable.
Change the roller springs first, then see what happens. #17

Check the ignition timing to ensure that it is not advanced beyond the F mark at idle speeds. When the spark advancer springs are worn/broken the spark advance starts swinging out as soon as the engine begins to rotate, which can cause some starting issues.
