Motorcycle Repair: gearcasebreather, 2 quarts, rocker boxes

Question
QUESTION: i have a 1989 XLH1200 sportster i took it to have a pushrod tube replaced, since then it pushes the oil out through the airfilter.i looked in the manual and there is a cearcase breather inside the cover that vents through a hose going to the airfilter.harley-davidson says my bike is obselete and the part is no longer available. all the catalogs i look at have crankcase vents/breathers but not gearcase breathers.is there another way of fixing this problem?i am assuming this is important, not to mention costly at $6.00 a quart

ANSWER: How much oil comes out?

QUESTION: it took 3 1/2 quarts to go 30 miles

ANSWER: With loosing that much oil it sounds more like the return side of the oil pump is not working correctly. Once oil builds up int he case it comes out the breather. I would have to oil pump checked for return pressure
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION: the return side of the oil pump is working,i took the dipstick out and the pump was pumping real good you can watch it return the oil to the tank i took it for another ride and only lost 1 quart, but i am still getting oil all over the side of the bike and my pant leg,but im am not losing as much oil now. i moved the hoseso it vents inside the aircleaner instead of on the outside of the filter.

Answer
SInce this started after you had the pushrods changed and your oil pump works correctly, then the only other problem could be in the rocker boxes. I have see where the wrong gaskets were put in and they pushed out through the breather.
Even though Harley says parts are obsolete you can still get them from aftermarket companies
