Motorcycle Repair: 1980 Yamaha XJ650, gauge wire, starter switch

Question
Hello there.  Just bought the bike listed in subject.  Worked fine, started up fine, and rode fine -- the first day.  Went to take it out the second day and it started up briefly.  Used choke.  It shut off, I took off the choke and went to start it up again.  Nothing.  A slight clicking near the battery.  Tail-light works and that's it.  Neutral light stays on and oil light goes on when I press the starter switch.  I charged it up for six hours using a 2 amp charger.  Nothing.  Fuses are intact.  Spark plugs seem to be in working order.  I took apart all the electrical connections, cleaned them off and put them back.  Still, nothing.  Just that slight clicking.  I appreciate any advice as this is my first bike and am extremely anxious to get out and ride.

Answer
Sorry it took me so long to respond. I would check the starter relay. It should be right beside the battery. It will have the power wire off of the battery connected right to it. Try to jump the connects on it with a heavy gauge wire and see if the started cranks over. DON"T HOLD THE WIRE ON FOR MORE THAN A SECOND OR TWO! Jump the two big terminals. If the starter cranks then you may have an issue with the solenoid or the starter switch itself. To check the switch pull the left handle bar switch housing apart and blow air in the starter switch then try and look for any arcing or dark spots. If you can clean the switch as good as possible. After you have reassembled the housing see if it starts. If not pull the relay out and check the same. I hope this helps. Thanks.
