Motorcycle Repair: clutch tensioner, clutch lever, custom harley

Question
Ok my question is simple to you but certainly not to
I have a custom harley built on a 86 sporty
the bike is awesome, but I have had several
Issues with my clutch tensioner, can u tell me the correct
Way to adjust this on my own without a shop
Visit....Wich I have done a couple times
And also how do I know when it's time for a new
Cable? Thanks!

Answer
To adjust the clutch, first loosen the cable at the cable adjuster so there is some play in it at the clutch lever. With the bike sitting upright, remove the rear derby cover on the primary. Behind it is a spring and a lockplate. remove them both. Now turn the adjuster so there is alot of play in it. Then turn it so it just bottoms out and tehn outward about 1/8 inch. Now install the lockplate and spring. If the lockplate doesnt go in because of the adjustment, turn the adjuster so the lockplate fits. Now adjust the cable so there is about 1/8 inch play in the lever. If the cable breaks, binds, or is really hard to move with the lever then its time for a replacement
Good luck and happyu riding
