Motorcycle Repair: starter, starter solenoid, thrust washer

Question
1982 FLH rear belt drive, changed rear belt drive to chain drive, installed new starterdrive, solenoid, looked at thrust washer, has little wear on it, looked at jack shaft, gear has very little wear. It has new S$S heads and has high compression, can tell by kick back on kick start.Starter relay would just click point together but would not even come close to engaging starter, went to button behind headlamp and ran wire from there to solenoid. It will click sometimes and sometimes it will engage and start, when it does click I can put it in gear and rock it and starter will turn over. Installed new battery and sometimes it will engage and not turn, just grunt so I let off starter button, maybe new solenoid spring will work? What do I look for to incorperate starter relay back into system? Thanks

Answer
Kickback on the starter might not mean high compression, it might mean the timing is advanced to far. If the timing is advance to far the starter has trouble turning the motor over. I would get it running and check the timing, replace the starter solenoid and the relay. Also, check the ground at both ends. If you have a bad ground it will have truble turning over
Good luck and happy riding
