Motorcycle Repair: 1998 yz400f left crankcase removal, clutch assembly, left halves

Question
To remove the left crankcase cover, do i have to remove the engine first, separate the engine from the crankcase and then separate the right and left halves?  Just trying to figure outhow to do it.  Probably have to remove the carb, fuel tank, plastics etc before that.  just checking.

Answer
Tom, I looked at the illustrations at www.bikebandit.com and elsewhere looking for the LEFT crankcase cover, which seems to be for the generator on that side of the engine. They left them off the list! If you need to work on that side of the engine, you will have to buy a special rotor removal tool so the rotor can be removed, allowing for more dis-assembly in any case.

The right side is where all the action is... with the clutch assembly and a sub cover there.

IF you are not splitting the cases, the outer covers should come off with the motor in the frame. I am not sure what kind of repair you are working on, requiring removal of the case covers, but usually they come off without an engine pull.
