Question
QUESTION: Hello Deron, I hope you had a great weekend. Taking your advice, I dug into my Amal 930 carb, albeit very cautiously. I began with your advice of trying to figure out if the choke was on or off and that became the real focus of this weekend's project. I concluded that the only way to get at the choke was to disassemble the carb, correct? By the way, I have NOT disassembled the carb as I'm waiting to hear back from you. It appears that I have to remove the mixing chamber top (I'm guessing all three screws) and then determine if the choke is on or off. How do you do that? What exactly am I looking for, and can I do that with out taking the chamber top off? In your pervious comments, you almost made it sound like I can check the choke (on or off) without too much disassembly. As you suggested, I'd like to eliminate each possibility before proceeding.
Thanks again for your time.
John

ANSWER: John,
You have two cables coming out of the top of your carb top cover...If you dont , then someone has removed the choke circuit entirely .  front cable is the throttle and rear is the choke...grab the rear cable and pull up on it ..if it moves more than just a little bit then your choke is on...second way to check is to remove your air boxes and stick your finger in the back of the carb...with one of your hands holding the throttle wide open , you should be able to stick the finger on your other hand right into the carb...if you cant , you should feel a verticle flat piece, about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the opening right in the mouth of the carb obstructing your ability to insert your finger...for 1972 you should have a lever up on your bars that has a small cable attached to it ....If you are not familiar with triumphs you may look at it and wonder what it does....it should be swung all the way clockwise , with the cable pulled as far as it can...if it is in the relaxed or anti-clockwise position then your choke is on .....if you only have one cable to the top of each carb , then the choke has been removed and you have just wasted a couple minutes reading all of this..lol.....

If you have the choke, make sure that it is off and re-ride your bike.

If you do not have the choke, then you have to dig further into the carb.  YOu should only have 2 screws on the top of each carb.  Both are around the edge of the carb top...

QUESTION: I really feel like we're getting close, so please stick with me. My carb, an Amal 930, has one cable (throttle) and 3 screws on the top of the mix chamber. It does not appear that there was ever a "choke cable." From a diagram I found, it appears that one of the screws is an "adjuster." I'm guessing the other two hold the top on?? Could the "adjuster screw" adjust the choke. The diagram I have of the Concentric carb shows an "air slide" in the mix chamber, that is also refered to as the choke. Further, I do not have the lever you refer to on my handle bars. Also, you referred to "each carb," this is a Tiger and I only have one carb, if that makes a difference. So, I guess my main question today is: do I now take the carb off the bike, or can I solve potential problems by just removing the air cleaner?? Thanks again!!!
J

Answer
Someone at some point has removed the "air slide"/choke from your carb, or you would have a second cable coming from the top of the carb...Your adjuster is just for cable slack for the throttle.  Two phillips head screws across from each other and at the outer edge of the top cover are what holds the top of the carb on ....take your air cleaner off...disconnect your fuel line, take off the two nuts that hold the carb to the manifold...slide the carb back and off of the manifold...take the two screws out of the top cover and remove the cover..with it will come the slide assembly and needle....If you have a fax, I can fax you pictures, or if you wish to do this on a saturday morning , I can call you from the shop and talk you thru it....
