Motorcycle Repair: 1985 honda vt700 shadow, honda vt700, pressure fuel

Question
just bought a 85 honda vt700 shadow . i cant get it to stay running figured it was a fuel problem so i took the top cover off of the fuel pump and manually pumped it by hand and it will start and i can rev it up . but once i quit pumping it manually it will idle and i see that the pump does pump every 5 seconds or so it will idle with the choke on but i can not rev it it will die and the idle is ruff . can i put a after market low pressure fuel pump on it or what can i do to fix this problem ? Thanks

Answer
Robet, it could be a fuel pump problem but if it's running every 5 sec, that sounds about right.  You can check out the fuel pump delivery by disconnecting the hose off the pump outlet and provide power directly to the pump. It should fill a cup in about 30 seconds or less.

Yes, if you can find a way to fit the pumpon the bike, it will work.
