I bought an old V45 Magna and the seller said he was running on the highway and 3rd & 4th gear went out. Is there any other possibility (like maybe the gear shift mechanism?) other than the transmission needs replaced? TIA.

Dan, a 3rd and 4th gear failure is pretty unusual.  It's a lot more common for the lower gears to go out since they have more torque going through them.  

If the transmission shifts normally but jumps out of gear when in 3rd or 4th, you're looking at a transmission rebuild.  If the transmission won't shift into 3rd or 4th, it's possible the gear indexing could have a problem and you might be able to fix it by opening up the right cover.
