Motorcycle Repair: Honda 750, honda cb 750, dyna s ignition system

Question
Jim,

I am putting the final touches on my effort to rebuild my 1972 Honda CB-750 K2.  The engine was rebuilt many years ago in Dallas by a good Honda mechanic.  It has been upgraded with a Yoshimura RT cam and a 900 kit from KI&L Supply.  The engine received a port & polish job during the rebuild process.  I have installed a Dyna S ignition system.  The carbs are stock.  The exhaust is a new MAC turnout system.  My question revolves around the airbox. I am concerned that with the modifications and enhancements to the engine, that the stock airbox may not give the engine the airflwo it needs. Should I stay with the stock airbox or move to another air cleaner?  K&N?  I am about to take the bike to a mechanic here in the Dallas area to crank it and tune it.  I expect he will have some insight, but I wanted your thoughts also.  Thank you.  Steve

Answer
I have very little experience tuning for performance but the only way to know for sure if your modifications do any good is to run on a dyno. With stock carbs I am guessing you can probably keep the current airbox.
The airbox's job is to give the carbs a supply of cool air at a constant pressure (regardless of how fast the air is moving around the bike). The airbox is tuned to the carb's slider/needle operation.
