Motorcycle Repair: tapping noise on my 95 flhr, crank case breather, adjustable pushrods

Question
QUESTION: i have changed the lifters and push rods and i still hear a slight tapping noise. what will still cause this problem? i have placed a crank case breather and bolted it in front of gas tank. replaced oil with synthetic. replaced umbrellas in rocker boxes. still have slight tap noise. please help? what else do i have to do to get rid of that tapping noise? tnanks.

ANSWER: All motors that lifters, like on harleys, do a little tapping. Its the valve lash in the pushrod and lifter. Even cars do it, but the motor is inclosed and you can hear it. It doenst hurt anything, its just annoying. Do you have adjustable pushrods and what lifters did you use for a replacement?

QUESTION: thanks for the reply. I changed lifters with Harley oem and the push rods with harley screaming eagle ajustables. I since, changed the small filter located behind the push rod covers and the tapping was minimized, but when i rev the bike to change gears, it taps a little louder. what do you think?

Answer
If you want to get rid of the noise you are going to have to go with different lifters. The Harley ones will tap. You can either get Jims or S&S. They are not cheap though. Like I said befor, the tapping doessnt hurt anything, its just annoying
Good luck and happy riding
