Motorcycle Repair: transmission leak, williamsburg ohio, harley softail

Question
My 2000 harley softail trans has a slight leak.I think it's coming from the shift lever where it goes in the trans case.the shift lever seems loose(rocks up and down not just in and out)before I go to all the trouble to remove the inner and outer primary I would like to know if the seal can be raplaced from the outside or do I have to tear the tranny apart? Also would like to know the same about the sleeve that goes between the shaft and the housing. As loose as the lever is, it seems to me that it may be worn as I doubt that the seal alone would be the cause of the looseness. The bike has 60k miles and is sometimes ridden fairley hard.My repair manual does not help very much. Thanks for any help.-Jerry  ,Williamsburg ,Ohio

Answer
In order to replace that seal you will have to remove the inner primary. Without taking out the shift shaft out, the seal is  bear to get out, but it can be done.
The lever you are talking about that is loose can be replaced at the same time. that lever will wear before the shaft will.
Good luck and happy riding
