Motorcycle Repair: 2002 Super Glide charging issue, ground 0, meter changes

Question
QUESTION: Mike,
I have a charging issue with my '02 Super Glide with the following symptoms: I've installed a new battery, new voltage regulator (twice) and performed the following checks. With a multimeter from pole-to-pole on the stator plug I read .2-.3 ohms, good. AC voltage at 3000 rpm 60-62 volts, good. From stator plug to crankcase as ground 0 ohms but, if I touch off on a crankcase bolt or my forward controls the multimeter goes ballistic. With the engine running I get only 13-13.2 charging voltage at the battery. With your experience do you think I need to replace the stator.
Thanks for your help...
Mike

ANSWER: Your stator sounds fine. the best you are going to get at the battery is about 13.5 volts. I am not sure why the OHM meter changes when you touch a bolt on the crankcase, the bolts and cases should both be a good ground
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION: O.K.,
Then the next question would logically be why, at the most inopportune times of course, my bike's battery is flat and won't start. Push start her and she'll run 2000 miles as long as you don't shut her off. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks for the timely answer to my first questions and look forward to your follow-up.
Best Regards,
Mike

Answer
What might be happening is the covering on the wires of the stator has come off. As you ride the wire vibrates, touching the case and shorting out. If your battery keeps going dead, then I think I would pull the stator and inspect it
